Seamless works with Bergen Port Authority (Bergen og Omland Havnevesen – BOH) on development and effective implementation of shore power as an important part of the digitalization of Norwegian ports. The introduction of shore power to big ships also has an obvious environmental benefit that contributes to energy efficiency of maritime transport and reduced emissions in ports.

Earlier this year it was announced that Seamless, together with seven Norwegian ports, started digitalisation and automation of data retrieval to ensure efficient handling and documentation of goods. Now Seamless and BOH work together to make available a shore power solution that several Norwegian ports can take advantage of. Keywords are self-service for the vessels, automatic registration, reporting and “smart” billing of power consumption.

– It’s very pleasing that the third connection point has now come into place. This means that we can supply power to three offshore vessels at the same time, says Project Manager at BOH, Even Husby.

Bergen harbour is a pioneer port with a total of three connecting points that now are taken into use. Some weeks ago BOH announced that Bergen Harbour for the first time had three ships side by side, all connected to shore power. With five large offshore ships as potential users, the development keeps pace with the needs, and further development is being planned at the ports of Festningskaien, Nykirkekaien and Dokken in Bergen.

Digitalization of ports and reduced greenhouse gas emissions

The focus on shore power is a project that is high on Bergen Port’s priority list. Both Bergen Harbour and Seamless wish to provide services that contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime transport sector.

– Being in front in the technological development is demanding. Here, the port of Bergen compiles both environmental measures and digitalization in one and the same initiative, says Øystein Chr. Løken, CEO of Seamless.

Bergen Harbour is a pioneer port on several areas and is an important partner for Seamless, which is now technology partner to 90% of the Norwegian ports. With Grieg Logistics and CMR on the ownership side, it is an almost self-written rule that Seamless has a “green” focus.

Cloud based services and applications

The connection to Portwin, a cloud based service from Seamless, provides easy and accurate data retrieval that ensures increased control and easy access to data such as power consumption. Portwin’s “shore power connector» is a cloud-based service from the software provider, which represents a standardization of data capture and works independently of the supplier.

– Today, it’s important that you have simple, effective tools at hand, literally. Everything that can be retrieved and reused as data and possibly registered in an app on the mobile phone, represents an important improvement, easier working methods and, in particular, increased opportunities for control, says Ingunn Østhassel, Product Owner in Seamless.

Registering shore power directly into Portwin implies a significant reduction of manual operations and incorrect reporting. It also contributes to efficiency, accuracy and control for both customer and supplier. When measurement of power occurs directly into the Portwin data system, both the customer and the supplier will monitor the consumption themselves at any given time.

Facts about shore power to ships

Use of shore power ensures a “seamless” shift from auxiliary engines in ships to power from land to maintain functions on board when ships are docked for loading and unloading. The switch from generator to shore power must be “seamless” in order not to destroy systems on board.

By using shore power, the ships can turn off auxiliary motor and generator that produces power for the necessary functions on board. This eliminates completely the release of harmful NOx, sulfur, soot particles and greenhouse gas CO2.
